What’s the big deal? (VBS Day 2)

It may not really seem like a big deal to you, but it was a great big, fat, huge deal for me.

Nope. Not the fact that a whole bunch of kids came back for the 2nd day of VBS.

Uh-uh. not even the fact that while some couldn’t come back today, we still had more in attendance today (30) than yesterday (26). That’s a pretty big deal, but not that big a deal.

To me, the best thing that has happened so far through 2 days of VBS is the fact that a boy (10, maybe 11 years old) took a jumbled mess of words on a flannel graph and without any help, perfectly arranged John 3:16 – a verse that he didn’t know the day before. He went home last night and memorized John 3:16, most likely without a whole lot of help from Mom and Dad.

Here, in Portugal, we make it a habit to celebrate small victories like great big ones.

If all that happens during this 3 day VBS is that one young man learns John 3:16 and the gospel seed is planted in his heart so that one day the Holy Spirit might give it roots and allow it to grow and flourish, that will be enough for me.

Of course I trust that that is not all that will happen, but if it were…I would rejoice fully confident that the “…Word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword…”

If this young man can put John 3:16 in order, I believe that one day, when it is most needed, John 3:16 can put his life back in order.

It might not seem like a big deal to you, but the more that I ponder it, the bigger a deal it becomes to me.

Oh yeah, it was also my son’s 6th birthday today. After the video, feel free to tell Justice Happy B’day in whatever language you wish.
